An 11-day guided tour with Karanta Camara in The Gambia
Join an 11-day birding adventure in The Gambia’s wondrous, colorful landscapes and rich biodiversity. Starting in Lemon Creek Hotel, famous for its incredible variety of birds, with each day you will have different chances to meet many species. From Kotu Creek’s vibrant area to the Tanji Bird Reserve on the coast. And from Gunjur forest’s greenery to Tendaba Camp’s breathtaking views. Once you cross into North Bank, you’ll find great exploration points like Morgan Kunda Lodge and Kunkilling forest, before going back towards the coast through Georgetown. Your journey will then take you to Tendaba Camp and Kiang West interior destinations; finally exploring Marakissa River Camp and Penyem Woods to conclude this unforgettable experience. With expert guides and photo-worthy animal encounters, this trip is a must-do for any nature enthusiast looking for a once-in-a-lifetime journey!
Pick from the airport to Lemon Creek Hotel ideal place for birders and bird photographers because its garden harbours beautiful birds like Blue Breasted, Pygmy, Woodland Kingfishers, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Blue Bellied and Broad Billed Rollers plus Bee Eaters and many more spotted around. We take you on a neighbourhood walk if your arrival time allows during the day.
We will begin the trip at 7:30 am to the Kotu Creek area for half a day looking out for Giant, Malachite, Pied Blue Breasted and more Kingfishers including Oriole Warblers, Black Egrets Robin Chats and many more. Kotu Creek can provide you with up to 80 species for a day. Boat trips are ideal to give you close view and photographic opportunity too. After Lunch at a nearby restaurant, we will later proceed to Brufut woods to see the Nightjars, Green and Violet Turacos, Pygmy Kingfishers, Grey-headed Bushrike, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl and Northern White-faced Scops Owl for the day.
After breakfast pick up time again at 7:30 am drive to Tanji Bird Reserve at the coastline along the lagoons down to the fishing centre for both waders and forest and Woodland species, Later we will proceed to Tujereng farmlands and the wetlands where we will look out for Chestnut Bellied Starlings, Red- Wing Warblers and more species lunch at Ocean lounge restaurant.
Pick-up time 7:30 am drive to Gunjur forest where we will look out for Capuchin Barblers, Green hylia, Collared Sunbird, Sulphur sulphur-breasted bushrike, African Goshawk Grey-headed Bristle Bills, Western Blue Bills and many more. Lunch break then we will head to Kartong wetlands and forest covered by the sea. We pick species like resident white-fronted Plovers, Osprey in their numbers, snake Eagles, kingfishers, African Spoonbills, Bea Eaters, Gulls and Terns and many more different species for the rest of the day.
Pick-up time is 7:30 am heading up country via South Bank of The Gambia where we will have our first overnight stop at Tendaba Camp making a series of stops for photographing. We will do more series of stops at various special sites looking for more birds of prey like Martial Eagle, Long-crested, Brown Snake, Wahlberg’s, African Hawk Eagles, Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Bronze-winged Coursers and many more
We leave early morning to cross to North Bank of The Gambia via Farafenyi by crossing the bridge to North Bank for overnight stay at Morgan Kunda Lodge. Expected species here include White-crested Helmet Shrike, Temminck’s Coursers, Abyssinian Roller, White-rumped Seed Eaters, Brown- rumped Bunting, white-headed Vultures, Northern Ant Eater Chat, Grasshopper Buzzard, Bateleur Eagles, Speckle-fronted Weavers, Yellow Pinduline Tit Chestnut-crowned Sparrow Weavers, Spotted Thickness and many more.
We will depart from the Lodge early after breakfast heading to Georgetown via Kaur Wetlands and Njaw waterholes attending quite a few sites in the North including a breeding colony of Red Throated Bee Eaters, we will then have our overnight stop at Bansang Riverside Lodge here we will conduct a boat to visit River Gambia National Park to look out for Chimps and Hippos plus Eagles and more birds and Animals.we continue our journey by crossing to Georgetown by Ferry into the Island for a night stay at Bansang Riverside Lodge, meanwhile, we will conduct a boat trip to the Kunkilling forest at a convenient time, here are looking for African Finfoot, Adamawa Turtle Dove, Western Banded Snake Eagles, Marabour Storks, African Fish Eagles and many more.
We continue our journey by crossing to Georgetown by Ferry into the Island for a night stay at Bansang Riverside Lodge, meanwhile, we will conduct a boat trip to the Kunkilling forest at a convenient time, here are looking for African Finfoot, Adamawa Turtle Dove, Western Banded Snake Eagles, Marabour Storks, African Fish Eagles and many more.
We will start our journey back on the south towards Tendaba Camp for an overnight stop over we will conduct a boat trip at two Belongs ( ie tributaries) at Baobolong Wetland Reserve at Kisi Tunku Bolong then back to the Camp for a lunch break, we will be visiting more sites along the way.
we leave Tendaba Camp after breakfast heading to the coast again birding along the way till evening when I will drop you at your hotel. We will make stops at various birding sites like Kiang West interior sites from Sankandi upwards to Keneba and many further Woodlands.
We will visit another important site Marakissa River Camp and Penyem Woods and the surroundings for the day then drive back to your hotel at the coast in the evening concluding our 11-day tour.
